A Meat Eating plant! Gobbles Rats!

August 12th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Leisure

Botanists had discovered a large meat eating plant in Philippines in 2007 and have published its details recently. They have christened it “pitcher plant”. There have been other meat earting plants that consume on tiny insects. However this one is a whopper, it consumes animals as large as rats.

Unlike Venus fly trap plant that uses its sticky surface to trap the insects before closing its leaves; the pitcher plant engages a trapping mechanism that is unique. It hurtles the animals inside via it’s huge base.

It was difficult locating this plant to confirm its location based on a Christian missionary report in 2000, as the pitched plant doesn’t grow in large numbers.

BBC says:

The plant is among the largest of all carnivorous plant species and produces spectacular traps as large as other species which catch not only insects, but also rodents as large as rats,” says [Stewart McPherson, natural history explorer at the Red Fern Natural History Productions].
