NASA Astronaut Kalpana Kalpana Chawla, Columbia Space Shuttle Disaster

Space is now human’s playground. From the day the first artificial satellite “sputnik I” was launched it is just no looking back. Sputnik 1 was launched by Russia on October 4, 1957. Now the number of satellites launched every year stands at over 100 ( artificial satellites ) and humans are going into space conducting research and are getting back on STS which means `Space Transport station’.

In December 1994, Kalpana Kalpana Chawla was chosen by NASA to be trained as an astronaut. She was chosen against 2962 entrants to join a 6 member elite team. She was trained at Johnson space center and inducted after one year after her fitness was certified for the job to be a Pilot.

Kalpana took off on Columbia

It was on 19th of November, 1997 Kalpana took off in Columbia STS-87 space shuttle launched from Kennedy space center, Huston, Florida. Apart from her there were 5 people on board- commander, pilot, two mission experts and two P.E.L.O.D. experts. Kalpana’s role was as a mission expert. The crew came back with enormous data that fueled research and analysis for the long time.

Columbia Space Shuttle

Columbia space shuttle was over hauled in 1999 to incorporate new features. It was redesigned to be a STS which means `space Transport station’. The idea was enable it to land in a narrow runway just like an airplane.

Kalpana, what was her?

Kalpana was selected once again for a space program. Her efficiency, intelligence, courage, dedication were the factor that made her eligible for the second mission. It was 28th mission flight for Columbia space shuttle this time and Kalpana with 5 others took off on STS- 107 mission on 16 January, 2003. Awesome experiments on life forms from earth and their behavior in the zero gravity were conducted in the shuttle that was orbiting earth at 28,325 kilometers/hour. Tragedy struck during their return. Single heat protection porcelain had come off the shuttles body resulting in a huge explosion that reduced the Columbia shuttle to rubles in the last 15 minutes to before landing.

Kalpana, dead!!

Kalpana was lose was mourned all over the whole, especially in India as she is of Indian origin. Her achievements have made great impression in the minds of Indians and are an inspiration to the future generations.
