A sugar cookie is a cookie made from sugar, flour, butter, eggs, vanilla, and baking powder or baking soda. Sugar cookies may be formed by hand or rolled and cut into shapes. They are usually decorated with frosting, sprinkles, or a combination of both. In North America, decorated sugar cookies are particularly popular during holidays such as Christmas and Halloween.

Sugar cookies probably was conceived from an earlier, unleavened cookie called a jumble.

Ingredients

• 3 cups all-purpose flour
• 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 egg, beaten
• 1 tablespoon milk
• Powdered sugar, for rolling out dough

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.

2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, and place onto un-greased cookie sheets.

3. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let it stand on cookie sheet for nearly two minutes before removing to cool on wire racks.
