Toyota Motor Corp. is expected to replace accelerator pedals on about 4 million recalled vehicles in the United States. The pedals that the vehicles came with can get stuck in the floor mats leading to catastrophic accidents. A blow to the reputation of the world’s largest automaker.

Toyota announced this Wednesday that the dealers would shorten the length of the gas pedals by about 3/4 inch starting in January, while the company develops replacement pedals for their vehicles. The new pedals ready by then will be setup by the dealers on a rolling basis beginning in April. In addition, some vehicles will be fitted with brake override systems as an additional precaution.

Toyota had issued a massive recall in late September 2009 and had instructed the owners to remove the driver’s side floor mats to keep the gas pedal from getting jammed.
