Update: Here is the story. There are many legends to Shivratri.One is, while devas and demons were churning the sea for AMRUTH ( samudra manthan), a pot of poison emerged from the ocean. This terrified the Gods and demons as the poison was enough to destroy the entire world. Since it has appeared it has to be drunk by someone by default. But who would do it? So the Devas approached Shiva for help. To protect the world, Shiva drank the deadly poison, however before he could swallow it, Shiva’s wife Parvati squeezed his thoat to prevent the poison from getting in. The poison remained in the throat after that. This made his throat turn blue, and he obtained the name Neelakantha, the blue-throated one. Shivaratri is in celebration of this event.
