image According to the fresh reports from Internet security firm, NetWitness, there is a latest computer virus that has infected 75,000 systems across 2,500 business and government agencies.  The virus is an adaptation of the Zeus botnet and is christened Kneber Botnet virus based on the user name that links the infected systems, gathers login credentials from social networking sites, online financial systems and email systems and sends the information across to criminals who can use it to break into the accounts, steal government and corporate information, and duplicate personal and financial identities online.

An official statement from NetWitness, Herndon, Va., states that they discovered the botnet previous month during a scheduled deployment of their monitoring software. They drilled down further to find an alarming infection in commercial and government systems that included 68,000 corporate login credentials, online banking sites, access to email systems, Facebook, Yahoo, Hotmail and more social networking sites.

Nearly 2,000 SSL certificate files, and dossier-level data sets on individuals that included complete dumps identities from victim machines were found to be compromised.

NetWitness concludes that the attacks have been on for about 18 months and appeared to have originated in Europe and China.
