Even though the National Day of Prayer 2010 faced many challenges lately, it is being held today despite the issues. It was on April 15, 2010, Judge Barbara, U.S. District Court Crabb in Wisconsin ruled that the “1952 law” declaring May 6th as the National Day of Prayer contravenes the prohibition on government-backed religion.
Crabb wrote in her ruling.
"Its sole purpose is to encourage all citizens to engage in prayer, an inherently religious exercise that serves no secular function,"
Couple of weeks back there was a rumor circulating that President Obama has cancelled the observance of National day of prayer. Read here!
However, President Obama issued a statement as follows.
"I call upon the citizens of our nation to pray, or otherwise give thanks, in accordance with their own faiths and consciences, for our many freedoms and blessings, and I invite all people of faith to join me in asking for God’s continued guidance, grace, and protection as we meet the challenges before us,"
However, the White House quit observing a public ceremony since last year under President Obama. However, the services will be held today in the Pentagon and on the steps of the Capitol, nevertheless President hasn’t committed to taking part in any of these events.
Earlier during George W. Bush’s presidency, a multi-religious service was held, with Protestant, Catholic and Jewish leaders invited for an event held in the East Room.
Why take the issues to heart. Keeping the differences apart, let us keep it simple, unite and pray to peace for all mankind irrespective of cast and creed.
