Milk is a well-known 2008 American biographical movie on the life of Harvey Milk, a gay rights activist and politician, who historically the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. He was elected to the member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.
The movie is directed by Gus Van Sant and wis ritten by Dustin Lance Black. The cast includes Sean Penn as Milk and Josh Brolin as Dan White, portraying city supervisor killed Milk.
The film garnered several rave reviews from film critics and guilds. Eventually, it grabbed 8 Academy Award nominations that included Best Picture, winning 2 for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Penn and Best Original Screenplay for Black.
Milk starts with a peak into Harvey Milk’s 40th birthday (in 1970), whilst he was living in New York City and had not yet come to San Francisco. It records his venture into city politics, and the numerous battles he wages in the Castro neighborhood as well as throughout the city. The most notable one is the protest against the political campaign against to curtail the rights of gay people in 1977 and 1978 run by Anita Bryant and John Briggs.
The movie also deals with romantic side of Milk and also on the political relationships he held.
The movie also investigates deeply into the double murder of Milk and Mayor George Moscone.
